Let’s talk lithography

Stone lithography 

Titled ‘The Puppets’, I believe I was going through a developmental stage when I created this work. My inspiration came from a simple childhood memory of a mobile string puppet show with fabulous characters and costumes. I found the puppets to be both sad and frightening.

Initially, I wanted to become familiar with the lithograph process, allowing the drawing to glide smoothly over the smooth stone. Materials used, included litho crayons, soft and hard, greasy liquid or stick  tusche for washes and pencils.

Edition:  Photographer: Catherine Mc Cue Boes References:  3.0 number 12 Artist Books 2013 This wonderful sculptural and structured artist book tells the story of Agatha Christie who went missing in 1926.  Agatha disappeared for 11 days, but was eventually located at a spa hotel in Harrogate under an assumed name. The reason behind her disappearance has remained a mystery; some say after a dispute with her husband over another woman she suffered amnesia caused by stress or in part due to her mother death. Whatever the real story is we may never know, but makes for a great mystery. A beautiful book.

Hand coloured linocut, first state. I first encountered May in the hospital, where she was confined to a bed opposite.  I initially perceived her as elderly due to her inability to move independently. However, my perception shifted when I attempted to seize her wheelchair. A diminutive yet resolute voice asserted that it belonged to her. Upon acknowledging my error, I approached her to offer an apology, thereby initiating our conversation. To my surprise, May was in her early 60s and had Multiple Myeloma (MMD), which had progressed to its final stages. Her voice was gentle and she retained complete awareness of her surroundings. Consequently, we embarked on a conversation about her passion for art, particularly Chagall. She expressed a desire to soar above the rooftops and observe the landscape of her childhood. These sentiments, along with other stories she shared, have inspired my latest artistic endeavour. While I am uncertain whether I have adequately captured her essence, ...
