Artist Book Exchange, 2019, organised by cheryl Penn, South Africa.

Asemic writing artist book exchange, national and international.

Asemic writing is a wordless open semantic form of writing. The word asemic means "having no specific semantic content", or "without the smallest unit of meaning". With the non-specificity of asemic writing there comes a vacuum of meaning, which is left for the reader to fill in and interpret.

Having spent some time at a remote  gas plant when restrictions on access and information was in place I started a fictitious series of works titled 'words in nature and post cards from gillmore'.  These works where hand written  and contain images of insects and plants found around the plant, a secret book whose words and images are yet to be giving meaning.

Cinzia's delicate and creative book arrived also. Using papers, hand and stamped text imposed with strips of soft blue and cream papers, this work is poetic in nature, a real pleasure to view.

Adrienne's book, 'asemic writing' also arrived, what a fab book, again good use of materials, printed birds and feathers dance over the pages as does the writing, spots of red orange adds interest to the narrative,
These books arrived last week, first was Kathy's a beautiful blue book making great use of different types of mark making, this a very intriguing book.

  • Steph Turnbull, Asemic writing, embossed linocut, blind text shapes rise about the white of the paper seems fitting for this subject, only by feeling the book do you get a sense of the rhythm of the shapes dancing along the pages, a different way of expressing the subject of Asemic writing, a beautiful book.

  • Cheryl Penn, Asemic writing, a thoughtful account of the global  mail art on the subject of Asemic writing. Scattered throughout the pages are examples of the artist's contribution  to the subject,  with examples of others work and  a written account by De Villo Sloan on the merits of Asemic writing. This account makes for interesting reading,  given the nature  of Asemic writing is itself devoid of communication but is in its application expressive, dynamic and enriched in movement, thank you Cheryl for sharing this, a thoughtful and well constructed artist book.

Strong embossed shapes fill the pages of this beautifully constructed book, hinting at an unknown language. Resembling text, the individual shapes are imbedded with tiny embossed circles and stars further adding to their beauty. A rainbow of color adds a touch of richness not unlike a neon light, all together beautiful book.

Black and White x-ray  images of body parts, infused with foreign objects, nail and rod, together with  fragments of maps dominate this intriguing  book. A red thread is stitched over the pages in a continuous manner, simulating hand writing, the head of a man watches on.  Well made and full of intrigue, this book poses more questions than it answers.

Red shapes with a hint of a Japanese sun dance across the pages of this semi pop out book,  franked either side by large orange  moons, giving a hint of something that is about to happen, Beautifully created book, it  is indeed mysterious.
